Whilst predominantly having a commercial and insolvency practice in the state Supreme and Federal Courts, Nic accepts briefs in all areas of commercial law including transport, competition, intellectual property, tax, and building and construction disputes, regardless of the jurisdiction.
Nic has particular experience in commercial disputes involving the resources sector in Queensland, particularly those involving coal. That experience has included being briefed as trial and appellate counsel for the General Purpose Liquidators of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd (in liq) (QNI) and for various coal producers and and infrastructure holders.
In addition to appearing for the liquidators in the winding up of QNI, Nic has also acted in other substantial windings up, including that of Equititrust Limited, and LM Investment Management Limited (in liq) in its capacity as Responsible Entity for the LM First Mortgage Fund, as well as in many other smaller insolvency matters.
Nic is briefed to appear with and without a leader, and with a junior, for both trials and appellate work and in private arbitrations.
After finishing university, Nic commenced work as the associate to the Honourable JA Dowsett AM of the Federal Court of Australia, before working as a solicitor in the employment and industrial relations team at Herbert Smith Freehills in Brisbane. Nic commenced at the bar in 2015, and has since also read for an LLM at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, studying English Legal History, International Commercial Litigation, Law and Economics, and the Law of Restitution (with a thesis supervised by Professor Sarah Worthington DBE).
